In Kenya, the impact of climate change is already evident, with rising temperatures and environmental challenges. Current statistics highlight the urgency of action:
Deforestation and Biodiversity Loss
A significant reduction in forest cover, with deforestation rates averaging around 5,000 hectares per year, contributing to biodiversity loss.
Climate Vulnerability
Approximately 10 million people facing high levels of food insecurity due to erratic rainfall and prolonged droughts.
Water Scarcity
This is a growing concern, affecting over 9 million people in Kenya. Erratic rainfall patterns and over-extraction of groundwater exacerbate this issue.
Environmental Awareness
While progress has been made in raising environmental awareness, only 20% of Kenyan households have access to clean energy sources, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and knowledge dissemination.
At SISITI, we are committed to addressing these challenges through our climate mitigation, adaptation, nature conservation, and knowledge-sharing initiatives to create a more sustainable and resilient future for Kenya and the planet.
What We Do
We lead conservation efforts through environmental restoration, tree-cover increment and prudent use of available natural resources. We raise awareness on climate change mitigation and adaption and build communities’ resilience towards climatic shocks such as drought and floods. We use innovation as a significant tool in reducing carbon emissions and fighting climate change. We gear our efforts at the local level towards the realization of global temperatures well below 2 degrees Celsius.
How We Do it
We partner with county governments and schools to plant trees and clean beaches. We advocate for conservation and sustainable use of maritime resources. We promote the blue economy as a tool to boost local livelihoods and reduce the pressure on land-based food systems. We look for innovative ways to reduce carbon emissions from households by promoting energy efficiency and adoption of renewable sources. We partner with research institutions on simple and innovative ways to curb carbon emissions to secure the future of our planet.
Mitigation (Climate Action)
SISITI actively engages communities in tree planting initiatives to combat deforestation and restoring biodiversity and ecosystems.
Adaptation (Climate Resilience)
By building resilience of communities to climate change through capacity building, innovative agricultural and water security practices.
Nature Conservation
We empower community members to take ownership of conservation efforts, fostering a sense of responsibility for the environment.
Knowledge Sharing
Knowledge dissemination and sharing of information on the interlinkages of nature and livelihoods to demonstrate to communities that the ability to feed itself is within its hands.
